Conquered sleep and the great escape
Well, if you keep up with my blog, you know that Jonah has had sleeping issues ever since I started taking care of Miles early in January. It has been wearing me out. Well, we think we figured out the problem. Jonah sleeps in what we like to call "a glorified hallway" beside a closet containing a water heater (catch an interesting link there?) Jonah has been waking up super early because the water heater kicks in when Aunt Tracy showers in the morning. [This was never an issue before because Tracy was on her maternity leave and didn't have to get up early to shower!] Jonah wouldn't go back to sleep, had poor naps, and in the end, was in an overtired cycle. We tried everything - putting him to bed early, putting him to bed later, one nap vs. two naps, you get my drift. He was still waking up early, napping poorly, and having trouble falling asleep at night. All that to say, we've finally conquered, and here's the new routine that's working:
Jonah has to be in bed every night by about 6:25pm at the latest (this requires an afternoon bath, since supper doesn't even start 'til 5:30pm). Every night before we go to bed, we set up a playpen in our living room. We then move sleeping Jonah into that playpen. He will sleep for at least a 12-hour night. And then take one 1.5-hour nap over the lunch hour. HALLELUJAH!!! And a special thanks to Glenn who came up with this idea.
And what's "the great escape?" Well, we have Miles' playpen set up upstairs, which I use for timeouts and as a holding tank for Jonah when I'm putting Miles down for naps. On Thursday, I put him in there for a timeout and went back to the playroom to read books to Miles. I heard a little grunting, a thump/grunt combination, and within seconds Jonah appeared at the playroom gate. We were wondering when this would happen!! Today he did it again, so we put him back in and videotaped his third escape. He was quite proud! So, does anyone want to place bets on when he figures out that he can also climb out of the playpen in the morning??!?!?!? Very soon, I'm sure, I will be awaken my Jonah climbing onto our bed! At least, I HOPE that's the first thing he does when he climbs out!
By the way, here's the interesting progression of pronounciations that Jonah has gone through for Miles' name:
Step 1: Mah
Step 2: Meye-o
Step 3: My-of

Yeah!! I am so glad you got Jonahs schedule worked out! It makes life a lot easier. :0) I am sure it won't be long before he is waking you up. We are working on stairs now.

I left out step 4 -- we've managed to teach Jonah to also call Miles 'homeboy'
Well, this morning it happened - Jonah got himself out of the playpen, and then hung out in the living room playing while I lay in bed listening for a short time and then got up - too worried he was getting into something!!
