Coca-cola, baby!

My husband was waiting in the airport yesterday and came upon a mother who was giving coca-cola to her 10-month old daughter. Quite honestly, he was appalled, and so was I when he told me. (As an aside, I was equally appalled when I once saw a child of about the same age sucking/chewing on a french fry at McDonald’s and even moreso since watching “Supersize Me.”) Good nutrition is so important in a young child's development.

What should a 10-month-old be drinking? I’m pretty sure (thanks to logic) that nature intended for babies to drink their mothers’ milk. Tons of research has proven again and again that it is the best option. (Don’t believe me? Surf the net and read what Dr. Jack Newman has to say about it. He works for Sick Kids’ Hospital in Toronto.)

Here in Canada (and in much of the developed world) we have the luxury of eating for pleasure. We are excessively surviving, if you will. Many of us can eat whatever we want whenever we want. And unfortunately sometimes the healthier options are the more expensive ones.

But all of this begs the question, when is it appropriate to start giving your child junk food? When should people first settle down to a bag of chips and an ice cold coke?

  • eeww! shudder. . . giving an infant caffeinated, sugar-laced soft drinks is just not right.

french fries - equally abhorrent for infants. . and i think for anyone! (i don't eat fries!)

when should we give our kids junk food? ideally never. I raised my girls with yogurt, whole grain bread, lean meats, vegetables, skim milk, nutritious cereal (they never got cocoa puffs or trix at this house!) i sent them to school with recess that made the other kids feel sorry for them and try to give them "dunkaroos" (cookies with icing) or cakes, cookies! I never bought potato chips for them -cuz i hate them! my inlaws used to feel 'sorry' for our kids and try to ply them with cookies and pop when they were over for visits! They used to give Rob full fat Carnation milk tins for his coffee, cuz they thought that i was horrible buying him skim Carnation Milk! Talk about sabotage!!! Boy they made me mad when they did that. My parents were disgusting, they would feed our young daughters "supper" of popsicles, cookies, cake, etc. . we would find this out after the fact. Needless to say we very seldom entrusted our kids to their 'care'. You can try to feed your kids nutritious food but it seems that the whole world, including even their own grandparents and all of their friends are against your best efforts!

Then comes the point when your kids will decide for themselves what they will eat and if you don't provide what they want - they go to get it elsewhere. But hey, all you can do is your level best, right? and hopefully your kids will develop a preference for good food! And happily, my kids both do like good for you food and so do my grandkids for the most part - but the 'family sweet tooth' is a bit of a problem for us all.. but we try to be good!

    great post, Sherri!
