Wedding Parties Hold Me Up

Our good friends are getting married in 29 days. Glenn is in the wedding party, and it got me thinking about wedding parties in general. I’m not sure of their historical purpose. And I’m not sure why we still follow that tradition, except that I know there needs to be at least one witness on each side for legal reasons. In a time in history when wedding vows are often taken lightly, what do I want from the people who were in my wedding party? Accountability!

I would like for the friends who stood for me to ask me from time to time, “Sherri, how are things going with you and Glenn?” and “What could you start doing this week to be a better wife?” I would like for the friends who stood for Glenn to ask him from time to time, “Glenn, are you feeling satisfied in your marriage right now?” or “Are you putting Sherri ahead of yourself?” And I would want them to encourage open communication between us.

I ask for this not because I don’t trust my husband and not because I don’t trust myself. I ask for this because I know that there is always room for improvement. And I know that one of the greatest gifts we can give to our child is parents who love each other and are committed to each other for a lifetime. And if we’re going to stick together for a lifetime, we need to work daily to make our marriage satisfying and our home a happy place.

So, if you have ever been in someone’s wedding party, pick up the phone and give them a call! If you were in my wedding party, I expect to hear from you soon! If I was in your wedding party, then prepare your answers!

  • i agree that accountability is sooo important. So, I wasn't in your wedding party, Sherri - but i did sing at your wedding (and what a lovely song you guys picked: "Devoted To You"! ahhh how romantic!!! As you know, we're pretty good at having honest discussions about lots of things, marriage included. I appreciate that book you got for me a while ago "The Power of a Praying Wife". . that was a good one! and also loved the humourous one you bought me! (can't remember the title!! ahh!) It was great fun to read and so true!!! Another good post, girl!

  • Great post - I will link to this in my blog this morning. I am honored to (a) be a part of your blog, and (b) have you - through Glenn - be a part of my wedding party. We are thrilled that you will be able to come and be a part of the weekend with us - I can't wait to see Jonah in his outfit! (Nor Erin, but that's a topic for another post...)
