Camp Reminiscing [Part 4]

My friend Natalie emailed me last week. She and my sister-in-law were trying to remember the various graces (prayers before meals) that we sang at camp. I've manged to come up with 4, but I think there were 5 or 6. Glenn thinks 5, but can only remember the 4 that I can remember. Anyone out there remember the ones I've missed? Here's what I've got...

Oh, the Lord is good to me
and so I thank the Lord
for giving me the things I need:
the sun and the rain and the appleseed
The Lord is good to me, Johnny Appleseed, Amen!
[Pause, OK, what's the deal with this prayer? Do I personally only need sun, rain and appleseeds? Click here to learn more about Johnny Appleseed, an American pioneer orchardist.]

All good gifts around us were sent from heaven above
So thank the Lord, oh thank the Lord, for all His love
Amen

Be present at our table, Lord
Be here and everywhere adored
These mercies bless and grant that we
may spend our lives in serving Thee
Amen

We thank you for the world so sweet
We thank you for the food we eat
We thank you for the birds that sing
We thank you, Lord, for everything
Amen

  • Hey Sherri,
Great thoughts about camp selkirk days...I usually think about those days too....not too sure if there were any more graces, but I do remember how much harmony was in the dining hall when we sang all of them...especially music camps.
Well, hope everything is going well with you guys.
I can't believe that Jonah and Caleb (our 3 yr old) have the same birthday!!!!
    Take care

  • ah, camp selkirk!! I miss the smell there, i miss camp fires, i miss the people, i miss canteen, i miss the pranks, i miss the fun, i miss the music and i miss the gorgeous pool and hot tub (when it was working!!) i even miss morning calisthenics. .

i don't miss the mud, nor the spiders, nor the sulphur water (back in the day), i don't miss the stifling hot old cabins. I don't miss the hideous food they served when i was a camper, i don't miss exams, I don't miss the dressing up in formal uniforms for last program, it got much better that way as the years went by.

i'm trying to think of any more graces than those. . i can't! all i can think of is all the different tunes that we sang them to. I cannot believe that my entire present life is the way it is because of that camp. I am sooo grateful to God!

  • Awesome Sherri! What a great memory!! I definitely think there were more...I can actually picture them posted on the walls around the dining hall. Didn't someone we know get a hold of one of those boards with the words on them? I thought it was Glenn, but maybe Tim? Too funny! Thanks for the memories!

  • Wasn't there one on the wall there that we didn't sing very often, but it used the tune "Eidelweiss"?

I'm trying to remember the words, but only the first line is coming to mind and that might not even be right. Does this ring any bells for anyone?

"Thank you Lord, for this day
    For our many good blessings..."

  • I just did a google search and found these words to the grace I was thinking. Ahh, google, where would we be without you???

Thank you, Lord, on this day,
    For our many great blessings,
Thank you, Lord, on this day,
    For our many great friendships.
Glory to God, may He hear our prayers,
    Guide us on forever,
Thank you, Lord, on this day,
    For our many great blessings.

  • Sue,
You are definitely right - there WAS an Edelweiss tune in use at times. Those words aren't ringing a bell for me at all. Perhaps I'm too old? Does this prayer sound right to anyone else?

By Blogger Sherri Lavender, At 1:18 PM

  • I seem to think there were 5 graces also, but can't come up with the 5th either!

I've heard the 'Edelweiss' one (slightly different words), but I didn't think it was one of the posted ones. I could be wrong though!

You'd think with everyone's combined years as campers or staff, we could handle this one!

I had forgotten Krista spent some time at camp!

I had missed the earlier posts about camp--thanks for linking back to them!

I wasn't there those years, but it brings back memories of my time on staff.

  • Me again!

Didn't we also use "Lord I Thank You For The Joy of Living" for returning thanks? I can't remember if that one was on the wall or not.

By Blogger Sue Matthews, At 8:49 AM

  • I think that's the 5th one! Good going Sue!

Anyone else remember that on the wall?

By Anonymous Anonymous, At 10:28 AM

  • yes, Sue we did sing that one!!! i don't remember if it was on the wall?

By Blogger kathryn, At 5:29 PM

  • Whoa...you guys spent WAY more time at camp than me. I was stumped after Johnny Appleseed! Nice brainstorming!

  • I saw Mona Ouendyk (Cooper) today at a wedding. . we talked about missing camp! She wishes she could get a hug from "Mom Lavender'!!!

By Blogger kathryn, At 10:37 PM

  • Mona!!! I love Mona! She was the best Camp Counsellor ever!! :)

By Blogger Krista, At 10:33 AM

  • Ummmm, so I guess we're going to have to leave this one 'unsure'... Maybe someone will stumble on here eventually who knows, without a doubt, the 5th grace!

By Blogger Sherri Lavender, At 9:24 PM

  • what about Mom Lavender does she remember.

By Anonymous Anonymous, At 3:52 AM

  • I think Sue had the 5th...

Lord I thank you for the joy of living.
Lord I thank you for the stars above.
Lord I thank you for the joy of giving unto others.
I thank you for all your tender love.

Wow! What memories those tunes bring back. Thanks for everyone's input and thanks to Sherri for the post!
