I don't get it

Jonah often wants to eat pizza, but can't because of the cheese. I've looked for soy cheese frozen pizzas but oddly, the only ones I can find actually contain milk elsewhere in the frozen pizza... I don't get it. The type of people who wish to find a soy cheese pizza, and correct me if I'm wrong, typically are avoiding ALL dairy and its products. For instance, vegans and people with milk allergies are all going to have to avoid the soy cheese pizza, because it contains milk elsewhere. Duh!?!?!?! Who exactly buys that pizza?!?!?!

Today I was determined to attempt to make Jonah a pizza. We hit the grocery store in search of soy cheese. I looked at several, and then found a mozarella flavoured rice cheese. Honestly, I'm not exactly sure what that IS, but hey, I figured it looked right and it even said "melts great" on the packaging.

However, in all my searching and label-reading for the right product, I actually forgot to read the label on that rice cheese... Once we got it home, I was thinking about how the packaging said "melts great" and it got me thinking -- what exactly is IN this stuff, that this non-dairy cheese can actually melt??!?!?

And that's when I discovered it. The product contains buttermilk fat and even has a label on the back that reads, "Allergy allert: Contains milk ingredients".

Dang, man!

And who is buying this stuff??

Perhaps it is a product for people health-conscious in other ways... Shall we investigate?

-Per 1 oz of the rice cheese, there are 4 grams of fat, only 1 of which is saturated
-Regular mozarella cheese made from whole milk has 6 grams of fat, nearly 4 of which are saturated
-And even mozarella cheese made from part-skim milk still has 5 grams of fat, over 3 of which are saturated

Perhaps it's just a product for people interested in avoiding saturated fat?

Anyone want my 227g rice cheese? It cost me $5.00!

This doesn't fix the peeve I have with non-dairy products containing milk ingredients. It happens all the time, and I just don't get it! Oh well, at least they have to put clear allergy alerts in the nutritional information area of the product's packaging! I just have to be vigilant!

Things you'd be surprised contain dairy...
-Sorbet
-Margarine
-Non-dairy creamers
-Non-dairy whip toppings

And interestingly, I can buy these:

but NOT the generic brands!

So, thank you Mr. Christie!!

  • I totally understand the issue of things containing things it them that you would never suspect, such as what you have discovered.

2 months ago Ai had a med change and started takint this drug that melts under your tongue but it was not working and making me feel darn right awful.

By some strange reason I was reading the package and discoveredd it contained aspertame, which I can not take.

It sure made me more aware of reading the labels. There are more and more foods with aspertame or simular products.

I am going to Waterloo tomorrow and I think the health food store my friend has might have milm free cheese I will check it out for you.

kk has suffered from this since childhood.
