funny - cheese - fever - edelweiss - reading

Yes, I've been blog delinquent lately, but hey, life is somehow busier. Jonah has continued to say funny things, but they have gone undocumented. He said something that made me laugh out loud today, but I forget what it was! This one was good too though...

I was coming back upstairs, rubbing lotion into my hands, and Jonah said

I don't like your greasy hands

Thanks to Alexis for finding some soy cheese for Jonah - it's in the style of processed cheddar (grilled cheese sandwich type) cheese, but we broke it up on pizza today and Jonah enjoyed his pizza. The stuff doesn't melt as well as the rice cheese, but hey, at least it doesn't contain buttermilk fat!

Jonah has been sick all week, mostly with just a fever, although he did vomit for a bit during a 12-hour period. His appetite has been quite poor. He has eaten some oatmeal, a pancake, a little pasta, and some pizza (including some processed chicken, red/green peppers, and pizza sauce). A random grape here or there... And plenty of soy milk, water and even some kool-aid. And that's over the last 4 days! Today only one 1/2 dose of tylenol was administered in the morning. Nothing since and his fever has stayed away. This is good!

About a month ago, Glenn started singing Edelweiss to Jonah right before bed for several nights in a row. Jonah loved it, and every night, whenever we ask what song should be the last one, he says in this hilarious monotone, low voice, "Edelbice." His favorite part is the phrase "Blossom of snow". Anyway, Glenn received an HMV gift certificate for Christmas and decided to buy this DVD:

We're all so glad he did! I have forgotten just how enjoyable the movie/musical is. We've shown Jonah a few clips of different songs. His new favorite is "Doh, a deer" which is can sing completely on his own. The other day he was sitting at the piano, plunking notes and singing it. It was so cute!

Tonight he painted some Edelweiss:

I started reading this book at one of the child care centres where I was working last month and borrowed it so I could finish it and Glenn could read it too:

Mem Fox is an avid supporter of teaching children to read via the whole language approach and is very focused on reading aloud to your children. It's definitely an inspiring book and we've already picked up some of her recommended books at the library. Tonight Jonah got to bed late because I got carried away reading poetry to him while he was in the bath. It was funny how interested he was in seeing the book and unfortunate that there were so few pictures to go along with the poems. I was reading poems from this collection of poems by Ogden Nash:
Jonah really liked this one

THE SABOTEUR

My pretty new watch
Goes tickety-ticket,
Whenever I wind it
It chirps like a cricket.
The second hand
Hippety hippety hops
Till shaken by baby;
Then pretty watch stops.

Then I read this one:

MY CONSCIENCE

I could of
If I would of,
But I shouldn't,
So I douldn't.

Jonah's response? "But what douldn't mean?"

Perhaps the truth of the matter is that I got carried away reading poetry to myself!? Here's one of my favorites, and it's definitely the right season for this one!

CAN I GET YOU A GLASS OF WATER? or
PLEASE CLOSE THE GLOTTIS AFTER YOU

One trouble with a cough,
It never quite comes off.
Just when you think you're through coughing
There's another cough in the offing.
Like the steps of a moving stair
There is always another cough there.
When you think you are through with the spasm
And will plunge into sleep like a chasm,
All of a sudden, quickly,
Your throat gets tickly.
What is this thing called a cough
That never quite comes off?
Well, the dictionary says it's an expulsion of air from the
lungs with violent effort and noise producted by
abrupt opening of the glottis,
To which I can only reply, Glottis -- schmottis!
Not that I reject the glottis theory, indeed I pride myself
on the artistry
Of my glottistry,
But there is a simpler definition with which I freely present you:
A cough is something that you yourself can't help, but
everybody else does on purpose just to torment you.

OK, one more...

THE SWEETBREAD

That sweetbread gazing up at me
Is not what it purports to be.
Says Webster in one paragraph,
It is the pancreas of a calf.
Since it is neither sweet nor bread,
I think I'll take a bun instead

Amen to that, Mr. Nash!

  • Well I just got off the phone with my little buddy Jonah and we had a discussion about how yummy his pizza was. He told me the cheese did not melt well but it still was real yummy.

he wants to have more pizza again some time.

He continued to talk a mile a minute I picking up half of what he was saying and just agreeing with everything, just to make a full conversation. Children at this age are so fun.

On Sunday when I was there the favorite word he learned fron his grandmother when a was teasing around with him was go away bennett you are aggravating me. Such a big word for a little boy but it was real funny hearing it from his mouth.

It is so fun to be apart of both Jonah and Miles lives. I love seeing and hearing the changes each week.

  • LOVE "The Sound of Music"!!

I'm sure very old fashioned to many of today's kids (and some adults), but I still love it and will show it to my kids when they are old enough to enjoy it.
