Love your neighbour… without agenda

My last blog entry touched on the idea that some people are harder to love than others. On Sunday our pastor was speaking about loving God and loving others and referred to James 2:8-9. Here are two translations of that passage:

If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, "Love your neighbor as yourself," you are doing right. But if you show favoritism, you sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers. (New International Version)

Yes indeed, it is good when you truly obey our Lord's royal command found in the Scriptures: "Love your neighbor as yourself." But if you pay special attention to the rich, you are committing a sin, for you are guilty of breaking that law. (New Living Translation)

Are you pursuing others for the right reasons? Are there people in your life who you choose to love just because you think that you can get something out of the relationship? Are you showing favoritism, paying special attention to the rich, talented, or socially elevated?

Love agenda-free!

  • This is such a hard topic, especially in light of the hurricane. There are so many people that need places to stay but I know that I would want to choose who stayed with us if we were to host a family. I know God would want us to take whoever was given to us but in my human selfish nature I would want to choose. Not that I have an agenda but I would need to think about my kids.

  • Hold up! I'm not suggesting you pick random homeless strangers and bring them into your home with your vulnerable young children... I agree that you do need to protect your family and be cautious in certain areas.

  • Ahh! I knew what you meant but this post just hit close to home for us right now. We have been praying about the possibility of taking someone in and at this point it doesn't seem like we can do it.
As I was rereading I was thinking about my neighborhood and the people that are friends with others because of connections or money or fame and then those that just love you because you are you. I hope that I am the latter. :0)
