Tear-jerker

At lunch today Jonah noticed the number 2 on my shirt, and then quickly pointed out that he was now 3 and would soon be 4. Since his 4th birthday is nearly a year away, I started to list off all the people in our family who would have a birthday before him. I mentioned that I was going to be 31 this year and joked that I was getting old.

At that point, Jonah became very concerned and worried. "But I don't want you to get old." And then a whole series of things were said and I was crying by the end, which, fortunately, he seemed to like and it cheered him up. Here were some of his concerns and thoughts about the prospect of me and others getting old... (he obviously gained the understanding that old people die, probably due to the recent passing of my grandfather)

-"Then it will just be me and Daddy?"
-"Do we know anyone else who will get old?" (I told him the truth - "everyone" - ouch!)
-He was worried about where he would live and who would take care of him
-He said he would take Miles to daycare every day when Aunt Tracy was old

I tried to explain that he and Miles would be big men when we got old. So, he said he's going to ask Miles to live with him in Grandma and Grandpa's house.

Anyway, if you could have just seen his face and heard the concern in his voice, you would have cried too!!! I'm relieved that he found my crying humorous though.

It's interesting how much he understands, but at the same time, doesn't. There is so much to teach him and so much responsibility on Glenn and I to do that! Poor little Jonah lost a little bit of his innocence today somehow. I've got to say, I don't really like this part of parenting - way too hard!

A family friend recently told Jonah that her buried dog was "sleeping". I just didn't feel comfortable with that. It's just not true! As a parent, I really want to protect my child, but it's my responsibility to prepare him for life!

Anyway, one resolution for me: NO MORE JOKING ABOUT GETTING OLD!!! It's apparently NOT funny!

  • Wow, that is really heavy stuff. Yesterday when you went to pick up Glenn, Joan, Jonah and myself walked around the house with umbrellas in the rain.

It was so cool to see things through the eyes of an innocent child.

When we got to the top of the garden steps he immediately game Joan his umbrella and then he went and rubbed his hands on the lavender plant and smelled his hands. How cute that was. Then he picked up two sticks and he and Gramma had to play the guitar.

We yelled down the sewers for Ratatouille that was so cool. So many questions about the tunnels, where things go and why.

They are just full of all kinds of questions and emotions, but that just is there innocence.

Sherri, yes you both have such a huge responsibility raising a child, but you two are fabulous parents and are doing a fantastic job.
