Follow up

I always recommend this website to parents and caregivers, however, I have found a new love at www.todaysparent.com. Check it out for all kinds of great articles. I am dying to get through all the toddler nutrition articles.

When I first started blogging last March, I posted “That nauseating foul unclean repulsive television screen” and couldn’t resist this follow-up post when I happened upon another great article. Check it out. It’s just a reminder that loving interaction (touch, voice, eye contact) with your young child is way more powerful and important that videos, television and fancy electronic toys.

Then, in April I posted “Coca-cola, baby!” and happened upon this article yesterday. I nearly fell out of my chair when I read,

A 2003 study in the US found that more than 20 percent of toddlers aged 18 to 24 months had french fries at least once a day, and more than 70 percent had candy or another sweet treat every day. About 10 percent drank pop on a daily basis.

OK, that's crazy. But check out the article - they did give some great "tips for the first exposure."

  • Thanks for emailing that smart baby article last week. I subscribe to Today's Parent, so I had already read it. I'm not a huge fan of the whole Baby Einstein thing. We got a few videos and Darcy really doesn't care for them. They just don't interest her. I don't think she's going to be developmentally delayed because of her lack of interest here.

In my experience in working with children, kids with involved parents do better. If parents are willing and able to read with their children, to teach them new concepts and to generally be involved in their lives, these are the kids who thrive. It just so happens that these involved parents are also the ones who are showing Baby Einstein and those sorts of products to their children. That's why the children do better in studies. It's not because they watched Baby Einstein, it's because their parents have been involved with them in so many ways. That's only my unofficial opinion though.

As for the junk food, we're really careful about that with Darcy. We jsut don't want her to develop bad eating habits this young. She's had a couple of french fries in her life, and a few little "treats" when we're eating things like ice cream. We've never given her her own portion (except for her birthday cake). I've got a terrible problem with junk food myself and I don't want her to repeat it.

Great post. Lots of good stuff to think about!
