Winter outdoor fun!
Here are some ideas for parenting young children in cold winter climates. They all involve getting off your butt and outside! Yes, it can be a lot of work to get all bundled up and get outside, but it really does feel GREAT to get out there in the fresh air! Be sure to check the outdoor temperature though. It's not advisable to be outside when it's -13degrees celcius or colder!
1> Build a snowman. Or a snowdog. Or an entire snowfamily. Or whatever might be fun and interesting for your child! Currently on our deck, we have a snowman who is 'walking' a snowdog on a leash! Originally, we just had a snowman and snowdog beside eachother. Today we rearranged them for kicks and giggles. This pic was taken "pre-rearrangement"...
2) Put your child in a sled and pull him/her!
3) Blow bubbles - they freeze in the air and land on the ground without breaking! Then your children can have fun breaking them.
4) Make snowballs and throw them at your outside window-free walls - brick is especially good because the snow sticks to it well!
5) Save old washable markers for winter - when the snow is cold and hard, bring them outside for coloring on snow - color on snowmen, snowballs, or simply on the hard snow on the front lawn! The moisture in the snow gives new life to old markers!
Finally, especially for children who have never experienced snow, a fun first experience could simply be bringing the snow inside to the highchair. Build mini-snowmen and watch them melt quickly!
p.s. One more idea -- when your snow creations start to melt, I say you should help the sun -- why not bring out a shovel, toy hammer or balls and join in on the destruction!?
